POLL: Is U.S. ready for a woman president?

When asked about a woman becoming president of the United States of America, Former First Lady Michelle Obama bluntly stated, "We ain't ready."

"Well, as we saw in this past election, sadly, we ain’t ready. That’s why I’m, like, don’t even look at me about running, because you all are lying. You’re not ready for a woman. You are not! So don't waste my time. You know, we got a lot of growing up to do, and there are still, sadly, a lot of men who do not feel like they can be led by a woman, and we saw it."

Is Michelle Obama right? 6 members have voted

  1. 1. Do you agree with Michelle Obama that the United States of America is not ready for a woman president?

    • I agree, the USA will never be ready for a woman president. Patriarchy is incurably in America's DNA.

    • I agree, today the USA is not yet ready. But it is inevitable that a woman will one day be president.

    • I disagree. The USA is ready and has been ready. The 2024 presidential election was bogus and stolen.

    • I disagree. The USA is ready. Unfortunately, when a woman is elected president, it will be a right-wing gorgon like Margaret Thatcher.

I fully agree with the fourth option in the poll, and that's because most Americans are uncomfortable with a female president, feeling distrustful that a woman would be "tough" or "strong enough" to lead the country. So, in order for them to feel safe about choosing the first woman as president, it will be a woman from the Repub Party who is right wing and militarily hawkish, which Hillary Clinton tried to do, in building her image before running for prez, but she failed, partly because she was a Dem.. But I do agree that we will eventually have a woman president, too bad that the first one will inevitably be a right winger..

Follow-up Poll: Which Woman Do You Think Would Make an Ideal President?

  • Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, because her spunk, Democratic Socialist ideals, and (unfortunately rejected) "Green New Deal" legislation are the types of "breath of fresh air" that are desperately needed in America.

  • Summer Lee, because, just like fellow "Squad" member AOC, she is fighting for the kind of future for America that I want.

  • Kristi Noem, because America is going to the dogs, and this b*tch knows how to pop a cap on that problem!

  • Rachel Maddow, because America would still be able to have a First Lady.

  • Caitlyn Jenner, because she's got balls!

  • RuPaul, because why not?! "Sissy that walk, Grrrl!"

good topic for a poll.

a note on poll options -- and an example.

i believe the U.S. is ready and has been but it depends on the right woman, just like it depended on the right Black man in Obama's case. But the only option there is to tie it in with the election being stolen.

so, i would say, try not to create a poll option that ties together multiple opinions (such disagree AND election was stolen)
OR
you could stick with those 2 "disagree" options as long as you cover the bases with a 3rd disagree option (such as "wrong women") that fills in the hole left by the other 2.

Where were the evolved gals last November, Cap’n?

i think some women prioritized inflation and Kamala didn't separate herself from Biden and didn't blame DT for screwing up covid which started the inflation

and, i do personally believe the election was rigged and votes were eliminated but i just think that's a separate issue that detracts from the heart of the question -- which is about a woman candidate's viability

He was the “right” black man only because he was a “safe” black man (not radical, not militant, not aggressive, not forceful — unlike the current occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue) for a segment of the electorate.

For me, Barack Obama was not the right black man. America needed — and still needs — a “person of color” who didn’t — and doesn’t — play it safe. Perhaps that man is Zohran Mamdani.

Let’s see how he does in NY💙‼️

“We ain’t ready” I do agree. I don’t think the US is ready to accept a female President. Until the majority of men consider women to be their intellectual equals, it’s not going to happen. We have a way to go. That being said, I do think Kamala Harris actually did win. Unfortunately, it was solely for the reason of trying to keep THE LYIN' KING from winning. She was not necessarily the best candidate but our only choice that was better than the lying king. I do think eventually we will have a woman President just not 2028.

Agreed. Like I said, we will have a woman president eventually, assuming we keep having any sort of free and fair elections, which is still an if, in my mind. But even then, the first woman president will be a right wing, hawkish Republican candidate, simply because that will be the necessary pedigree to get most men, and even women, to feel safe and comfortable enough about voting for her. Because otherwise, both men and women voters are still too biased in thinking any Dem woman candidate is not tough or strong enough to handle the job.

According to the Pew Research Center, "Women now outnumber men in the U.S. college-educated labor force." Whether a college education automatically equates to being more intellectual is debatable. Women being intellectually equal to men is intimidating to some men.

The attraction to, and need for, a politician who exudes a "strong father" vibe is an American neurosis, IMO. There is a lot of squawking about "The Patriarchy" (Boo! Hiss! Sis boom BAH!). I'd like to see more discussion and analysis about American women who support and perpetuate patriarchy and "Toxic Masculinity." By my lights, DJT "winning" the 2024 presidential election was not a simple case of "Boys vs. Girls." A lot of girls jumped on Donnie's bandwagon -- specifically White Girls. After November 5, 2024, a local talk show host who is a black woman angrily and bitterly expressed it thusly:

"White women got a lot of work to do."

I totally agree that many men are intimidated by women who are smarter or have more education than them. You see that all the time in the dating game and on the dating sites. And the strong father thing has long been a feature of why some people, both men and women, are attracted to fascists and authoritarian strongman leaders, like Hitler and now THE LYIN' KING. It was well-documented after the Nazi era that Germany was particularly vulnerable to his movement because of how all Germans, of both genders, were socialized to support or prefer strong father figures in their families and their society. I too am interested in your idea of our American neurosis, as well as why so many American women still supported and support THE LYIN' KING, despite his open misogyny and his history of abuse towards women. One theory I've heard is that those women are "Pick Me" types, who are attracted to those sorts of men in their personal lives, and also in the political realm, they want such men to pick them out for positions of power and privilege, etc.. I also agree that the women who supported THE LYIN' KING and who support his party, are almost entirely white. They sure seem to be traitors to their gender, in my mind, but then again, even in The Handmaid's Tale, there were still the Aunt Lydias, who sold out their gender and collaborated in the oppression of other women, just so they could have some greater privileges than the vast majority of women who weren't married to the male leaders of the fascist patriarchical group that ran things. It's nice to see fiction reflect reality so well, esp., when it's written long before the fiction becomes reality..

Right now, AOC would seem to be the leading female candidate for prez, but I have my doubts about her being able to win, and even about whether she would end up running for it. I also have my own personal doubts about whether she could be trusted to not end up being just another corporate sellout, same as Obama was, and that Biden also was, altho with Biden, everybody in the know and paying attention, already knew that he would be just another corporate Dem centrist, since that's what he'd always been in the Senate.. And don't even get me started on what a sellout and traitor to the working class, that Bill Clinton was...

Tell me you're referring to Ghislaine Maxwell without telling me you're referring to Ghislaine Maxwell.

Regarding traitors (in a broader context), the 2004 New York Times bestseller What's the Matter with Kansas? (which I have never read) by Thomas Frank explored why some folks vote against their own best interests. Years ago, a heated discussion about that subject in a social media forum struck a nerve and has always stayed with me. One incensed combatant angrily challenged, "Who the HELL are you to tell me what my best interests are?!" End of discussion, as far as I was concerned.

Hey, Man, if you're willing to financially cut your own throat because you're more outraged that On the Origin of Species is being taught in schools or because some tranny is going into a women's restroom or because you thought that Barney the dinosaur acted gay . . . who am I to try to convince you to think, believe, and feel otherwise? You do you, Clem . . . and cue Ron White.

But, I digress.

I agree, I will let the rubes be rubes and not waste time, energy or thought trying to change them. But I will also not deny that I do feel superior, smarter, and more informed than them. So call me a snob or elitist for saying and feeling that way about them and myself, but my next ? would be, as my former boss used to say, "Now, want to ask me if a give a 🍆>🐱 (what people think of me for that)?"..... And yes, I am referring to Maxwell, but also to the suburban white female voters who supported THE LYIN' KING, as well as the Repub women in congress who are also loyal THE LYIN' KING supporters..
