Captain's Log—Stardate 2025.15.10

it's been 1 year since Newbl construction began. Now 3 weeks into its initial launch, i'm still deliberating its purpose and direction.

i steered an online dating service for over 25 years and a prior political discussion forum for 10. You'd think i'd have learned enough. Still, things change. And key questions remain:

  • i know the public is tired of being exploited by unscrupulous money-sucking data-harvesting profiteers. But, even if they embrace the concept of a non-profit social network, are they willing to help built one from scratch?

  • communicating can be a heavy lift. Are web-surfers too dependent on instant gratification -- 30 second cat-clips, hot TikTok stars, vertical doom-scrolling, swipe-left-right decision-making, and thumb-typing?

  • thousands of cyberspace travelers have dropped in. Most — hesitant to sign-up and engage. Surely, numerous bugs in the software have impeded growth. How much?

i'm feeling the next phase should be about me listening. And not to any half-human Spock or a.i. Copilot. i need to beam down. explore deeper. interview the native life forms...

I am new to this site, my old go to site is in its death throws though we old timers are reluctant to give up on it, we have seen the writing on the wall. I am in search of a new home that is easy to navigate, has honest interaction with real people and has like minded people. I hope to find it here.

Welcome, glennlab! I hope that you find what you are looking for here on newBluePlanet.

Regarding "a new home that is easy to navigate," the nBP layout is a challenge, IMO. But once you learn it, you'll get the hang of it, I reckon.

I invited glennlab to here, as we are both refugees from Agnostic.com, a similar site to this one, only targeted for non religious, non believer folks. We met up on there years ago, when it was still active and had thousands of members. We both hope this new site has a better run and future than Agnostic did.. Like Agnostic, this site depends on word of mouth, not paid ads elsewhere, which is why the other site never developed local dating options, but it did become a very big online community, of forum discussions and specialized interest groups.. Time will tell if this site will ever reach critical mass in members, enough to offer local dating options for most of its US members..

as the developer of this site, but not the Invision software, I'd say the older version was much easier for me to build on and administer while this new version is far more powerful and feature rich, and the learning curve is steep. That applies to the user experience too. There are 2 keys to shortening the learning curve:

  1. You can't and won't fully appreciate the features on a cellphone. The screen size limits navigation options. And since the primary form of engagement is typing, a keyboard is a must.

  2. Utilize the navigation short-cuts. For example, my daily routine is:
    (a) go to the home page, click the Unread Content link from the ACTIVITY menu and go through them. (b) click the NEWS link to view the CHATBOX and look over the external news headlines.

understand that contributing is the key to this becoming an experience others will want to return to. For example:

  1. when I see, hear or think something noteworthy, that is not already abundantly covered in the news, I post it.

  2. i share past experiences and knowledge that others might find useful -- such as liberal arts reviews or political, philosophical, social or scientific knowledge i have studied.

  3. a goal is to be known and to know others. To get to the point were we're i'm thinking... hmm, i wonder what member-X will say about this, or how member-Y feels about that.

  4. if i don't have something notable to say today, i rate something someone else said.

thank you, BobDylan, for inviting glennlab here. That's the hands-on way of building this community.

You're welcome, V.. I'm hoping glennlab will also spread the word to the remaining Agnostic members he is still in contact with, as they too would be good and interesting members here, when it comes to community involvement and contributions to the forums..
