Response from the author:

Thank you, Lindy, for your appreciation and for your own meritorious list. Except for a couple of Bruce Springsteen songs, I was familiar with most of them.

Here are a few more tunes that are not protest songs per se but musical commentaries about the way of the world, the facts of life, and the wearying truism of plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

God Bless the Child (Blood, Sweat, & Tears' jazzy spin on Billie Holiday's classic bluesy original rendition)

Brother, Can You Spare a Dime? Performer: Bing Crosby

Strange Fruit, Performer: Billie Holiday

Pleasant Valley Sunday, Performer: The Monkees

In the Ghetto, Performer: Elvis Presley

Glad to Be Gay, Performer: Tom Robinson Band

Living for the City, Performer: Stevie Wonder
